This will be a settlement conference intended to conclude the case rapidly. This is just a guess and only a guess, but the short date given here is likely an indicator that a plea is being hammered out and is almost done.

A hearing has been set to resolve disputes between the prosecutors and Christopher Smith on enhancements to his sentencing guidelines.

The sentence range in this case goes from a mandatory minimum of 20 years to a maximum of life. (This is in addition to whatever he gets in his other trial -- which we're not tracking because almost all of the documents are under seal -- for witness tampering.) The government is asking for a term of 30 years to life, while the defense is asking for the minimum.

This matter having been referred to Magistrate Judge Geraldine Soat Brown for proceedings with respect to plaintiffs' motion to compel, an initial status hearing is hereby set before Magistrate Judge Brown on 08/08/07 at 9:00 a.m. in Courtroom 1812 for the purpose of setting a schedule for such proceedings.
